weird/lovely new music: Bartók Felt
I have new music out today, an EP called Bartók Felt. I'm honestly not sure how to talk about this project, except to say that I really love it!
The reason I'm unsure is because I've done something that will undoubtedly annoy some people — I've taken the music of one of the 20th century's greatest composers, Béla Bartók, played it on the wrong instrument (piano with felt between the keys) and rearranged it. Bartók purists would not be happy. But to me it makes perfect sense because it sounds so good — the mix of Bartók's sound-world with the felted piano just seems to work really well — and I've got really lovely responses from everyone to whom I've played it, including the record label 1631 Recordings. For those of you who haven't spent a great deal of time thinking about Bartók's music, I hope this will be a nice introduction to his world.
