Outlines Through Mist

My latest piece, "Outlines Through Mist", is out now.

Last autumn, I was stayed in a gorgeous flat in Edinburgh with a wonderful view over the trees of a nearby park, with Edinburgh Castle in the background.

The flat belonged to my friend Jenny, and one morning, I sat down at her gorgeous Bechstein and looked out at a view that looked something like this (albeit with more autumnal leaves!):

Gradually the morning mist cleared, revealing this:

Gorgeous. Those of you who know Edinburgh will recognise the familiar Castle high in the distance.

I improvised, and ideas just seem to flow through my fingers, with a repeated pattern that shifted unpredictably and evocative chords that pierce the texture.

The resulting piece has just come out. It's called Outlines Through Mist and I love it. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do!

My partner Anna came up with some typically gorgeous artwork:

I feel like we both really managed to capture the moment.

Sheet music is available, if you're curious! It looks like this:

Playing the piece well involves much crossing of hands, which is an interesting challenge! Watch me play it in the video below:

This is the first of two pieces I composed on Jenny's piano that morning. I'll share the next one in mid-December. That one took its inspiration from the Bach Prelude that she left open on the piano stand. If you know your Bach, you'll recognise fragments of his piece reconfigured into something new!

Thanks for reading and for your ongoing support. Have a lovely weekend,
Garreth
