Apart, Together — a new piece, out now
Hello everyone,
My new piece, 'Apart, Together' is coming out today. It's a gentle, peaceful piece, but with a bit of an edge. I'll explore a little bit of the compositional process below, but if you'd like to just get on and listen to it then click here to listen to it on your favourite music service.
I couldn't be happier with the artwork which, as usual, was done by Anna Salzmann. This one reminds me of skyscrapers in a lonely city, which is one thing that I had in mind when composing.
Titles that can be understood in multiple ways always appeal to me the most, and this is definitely one of those. It's partly reflected in the way the music works — the left hand plays clusters of notes (together), the right hand plays in a syncopated rhythm that sets it apart from the left hand — but it's also a reference to something more complex. We all exist somewhere on a spectrum between introverted and extroverted: introverts get energy from being alone and get drained by being in company, extroverts get energy from being in company and are drained by being alone. Which are you? I'm fundamentally pretty introverted, but I still really enjoy company, just not too much! I've also noticed that it's perfectly possible to feel alone even when in company, or to feel a sense of connection with a person even though they might be on the other side of the world. Things are rarely as simple as we like to make them out.
